Project: Little Round Top Civil War Diorama
Description:“Little Round Top . . . was the site of an unsuccessful assault by Confederate troops against the Union left flank on July 2, 1863, the second day of the Battle of Gettysburg.” —from Wikipedia.
This historical miniature was based on a number of assorted renderings of the battlefield as well as Google Earth views of the exact area, which were used to generate accurate elevation data.
The final touch will be the addition of scale figures to bring this historical locale to life.

Project: Pearl Harbor – Ford Island 1941 Diorama
Description:The client has a collection of waterline WWII battleships that he wanted to display in a realistic setting.
This display recreates Ford Island, the location of “Battleship Row” in the Pearl Harbor Naval Base as it appeared just prior to the December 7, 1941 attack by the Imperial Japanese forces that launched the US into World War 2.

Description
Project: Marc Jacobs Fashion Week 2012 Volcano
Description:Marketing experts know that they sometimes have moments to capture the attention of the modern shopper. What better way to pull someone out of their path than with an exciting combination animated train display/ showcase shelf for featured products?
This was the idea behind the tropical island volcano dreamed up for Marc Jacobs’ prominent New York location for Fashion Week 2012!
This project seamlessly combines a lush tropical island, a glowing smoking volcano, a modern train that circles the island, a stone viaduct bridge, and a number of “Easter eggs” for the alert viewer. The lava trails down the side of the caldera glow and slowly pulse bright orange. To further the effect, a ring of orange LED’s sits inside the crater rim to light up the smoke that puffs out. Interspersed among these elements are deliberately flat and vacant areas intended to display small fashion items to the customers, like purses, shoes, jewelry, etc.
Because the location in the shop may not have had immediate and easy power access, the display runs on rechargeable batteries that can be swapped out via a hidden hatch in the rear.
Although only scheduled for a one week appearance, the volcano was so popular that it remained on display for many months. Another SMARTT choice!

Project: Philippine Fishing Village
Description
Project: Philippine Fishing Village
Description:On a recent project, SMARTT was asked to design and include a replica of a Philippine Fishing Village. While much of the layout that included this project was scaled at 1/24, this section needed to be build in HO (1/87) scale to feature the large water area and beach. Everything in the scene was hand fabricated just for this diorama, and the stilt houses and docks were embedded in a clear water compound for realism. You can see more from this layout here…

Project: Hobbiton
Description
Project: Hobbiton
Description:In J.R.R. Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit, the small Middle Earth folk known as the Hobbits live in a village called Hobbiton, part of as the region called The Shire. Each hobbit lives in a hole in the ground, as described in the narrative … “In a hole in the ground there lived a hobbit. Not a nasty, dirty, wet hole, filled with the ends of worms and an oozy smell, nor yet a dry, bare, sandy hole with nothing in it to sit down on or to eat: it was a hobbit-hole, and that means comfort.”
The creators of the Lord of the Rings and Hobbit film series went to great lengths to bring Tolkien’s narrative to life, and for a recent project, we did likewise from their bold example! This diorama is part of a large fantastical model railroad project featuring a number of movie based dioramas. Each was completely custom fabricated. You can see more here…

Project: Hagrid’s Hut
Description:In the amazing imagination of writer J.K. Rowling, Rubeus Hagrid is the loyal half-giant groundskeeper at Hogwarts School for Witchcraft and Wizardry. Hagrid lives on campus in a stone hut at the edge of the Forbidden Forest, although his hut has, through the magic of changing film decorators and set dressers, moved around several times. The hut, as shown, was designed from numerous photo references, mostly based on the later film appearances, when the look finally settled.
