Description
Chicago in Miniature
This is another of our blockbuster combo scale layouts that is second to none. built by the dreamers here at SMARTT.This multi-level/multi-track layout Features about sixty turnouts for almost infinite operating maneuvers in High-Rail O-scale, delivering lots of action with the utmost realism. While the 3-rail mainline trains wend their way between a number of custom painted and upgraded operating accessories, scratch built structures, and
Fabulous one-of-a-kind bridges, there is also an independent double-track operating subway serving 2 stations. All of this O Gauge empire Features digital control for both Lionel and MTH.
As if this was not enough, one entire wall, over thirty feet long. encompasses an idealized HO scale version of part of the downtown Chicago skyline. Almost two dozen replicas of signature Chicago landmark structures, some reaching over four feet high. set the background of a busy city scene bisected by the Chicago River in the center. Selective compression and creative use of theatrical Forced perspective makes everything blend together naturally.
Of course, the Windy City would not be complete without the world Famous Chicago 'EL: Our model, like the prototype, is double-tracked. Bi-directional automatic operation where the trains make station stops at several replicas of real-world EL stops brings the whole scene to life. Adding to the mix is an operating Faller Car System passing back and forth under the EL and across the river.
Even with all this, there's room For expansion in the drop-in scenic sections surrounded by the EL. New structures can be swapped in and out of those areas currently left blank as new ideas are requested by the client.
Technology is front and center in this layout. The HO 'EL' trains are run by custom electronics. The entire EL itself, as well as significant parts of some signature buildings, were custom designed and Fabricated From high resolution 3D printed parts, as well as our usual menu of Laser cut and CNC construction techniques.
Finally a programmable multi-color light set running the length of the perimeter sets the mood.
Chicago...my kind of town!!!

European Themed Automatic Operation Layout
Though model railroad layouts typically occupy a spare room or basement, this little gem of a layout was designed as a 3-Dimensional work of art to be displayed in the family recreational area as a central exhibit for all to enjoy. Small, but intricate, this layout's original geographic theme was North America, hence the Code 83 track and some stylized American Features. Then, early on in the process, the client decided that the places he most wanted to depict were from his family's travels, so that every Family member could re-live some of their cherished memories. To accomplish this change he was in good hands since the expertise of the designers and craftsman here at SMARTT often adapt to a client's changing interests, midstream. As a result, before the scenery phase began. the decision was made to create a European styled display.
The centerpiece of this layout is an homage to the riverfront of the Austrian town of Hallstadt, a picturesque village on the lake Hallstätter See. Prominently Featured are a beergarten (beer garden), vineyards, castles, and an operating ski-lift. There are also romantic vignettes of key Family memories. With so many structures, figures, and details, there is always something new to discover.
The layout features an automatic hidden reverse loop For unattended operation via the DCC control system perfect for entertaining the guests or just relaxing and watching the trains run. The layout is finished in a polished wood veneer for an antique Furniture look.

SMARTT's Reworked Atlas Central Midland Layout
The venerable and popular Central Midland layout designed by John Armstrong. first appeared in the Atlas Layout Book decades ago, and has been repeatedly Featured in Atlas publications since then. Of course it wouldn't be a SMARTT layout without putting in our own magic touches.
We have maintained the spirit, look, and feel of the original Central Midland plan, while incorporating all kinds of new and creative Features to make this tried and true design even more exciting and different.
The original Central Midland (CM) layout squeezed a lot into a 10 Ft x12 ft L shaped space.
We resized the layout to be longer and wider, with a 12 Ft x19 Ft outer perimeter and mirrored the track plan so that the short leg of the L is now on the left-hand side. The larger space enables us to increase mainline curve radii to a generous 32"-36". Broader curves mean that modern equipment, long passenger cars, or large steamers, can run comfortably with a much more majestic look.
The increased size allows for gentler grades (2.1% in visible areas. and 2.3% in hidden areas), with clearance For modern era double stack container cars.
The original CM ran less than 200 feet of track. Our revised design. with two independent mainlines, increases the overall track run to just under 500 Feet!
To really liven up operations, the SMARTT design includes a new sweeping reverse loop, and bi-directional hidden staging tracks to introduce new trains onto the scene!
Realistic track work was achieved using Code 83 Walthers/Shinohara Flex track and turnouts. Most of the fifty (yes. 50) turnouts are broader, gentler #8's, as opposed to the tighter #4's and #6's on the original CM.
The theme of the layout is the Pacific Northwest. The geology and geography, the scenery design, and indeed, many of the city façade buildings, were taken directly from photos of the area. In addition to a few brick and mortar industries serving the added industrial spurs, there are detailed vignettes of a logging operation. a petroleum refinery, and a grain storage Facility.
We expanded on the original CM bridges with more complex bridges passing over and under each other. The long, meandering lake graced by all these bridges invites you to jump right in.
Finally. we finished off the aisle areas of the layout with a rich polished rosewood veneer for a fine furniture look. We've always pointed out that a model railroad layout is a family entertainment center. This one is already providing many years of enjoyment.
